Before baby comes along, an important thing to check off your list is baby proofing your home. Doing this before baby arrives is a smart idea because you're most likely going to be VERY busy for the next 18 years! Making sure your home is safe now will also prevent against possible dangers when baby starts crawling or walking.
While you probably know to look out for sharp edges on furniture and gating stairways, there are lesser known dangers that deserve some attention before baby's arrival.
Storage Toy Boxes
1. Power Strips
Cover up any electrical outlets and wires to prevent access to these choking hazards. Look for single row power strips in stores to help reduce the amount of wires running in your home.
2. Oven
Toddlers often accidentally bump into the stove or play with the dials. Using stove knob covers and even an appliance lock can keep kids from turning the stove on and burning themselves accidentally.
3. Houseplants
Plants can pose the unforeseen danger of being eaten or tasted by toddler. If you don't want toddler to eat dirt and stray leaves, keep plants well out of reach of child.
4. Pet Food
When baby starts crawling, he'll be sticking everything in his mouth and unfortunately, he might think Fido's food is on the menu. Let him know it's not! Dry kibble can be a choking hazard for baby. Keep the dish isolated from baby or be diligent in removing it as soon as your pet is finished eating and you can steer clear of this danger.
5. Crib
Often, parents don't realize that mobiles must be removed from the nursery when baby is about 5 months old. Baby can be entangled in the string and small parts of the mobile can be a choking hazard. A lot of experts also recommend getting rid of bumpers and blankets to avoid suffocation risks.
6. Toy Storage
Traditional toy boxes have heavy, hinged lids that can easily close on baby's fingers. When you're buying a toy chest, look for ones that are made with removable lids or have safety lid supports to prevent finger pinching and harm.
7. Furniture
You already probably know to look out for sharp edges that baby could walk into or crawl into. Additionally, you can examine your home for furniture that is likely to tip or fall and secure them to the wall. Make sure books or trinkets on shelves are in safe places away from child's reach.
